Lumbini is located in the Rupandehi district of the Lumbini province of Nepal. It is one of the most important religious places in the world. This is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who was the founder of Buddhism, the fourth largest religion in the world. Buddhist pilgrims from all around the world are attracted to this place for that reason.

Lumbini is a sacred site for Buddhists, as it is home to many ancient temples dating as far back as the 5th century BCE. One of them is the Mayadevi temple, named after the mother of Gautama, which is believed to be built in the exact place where Lord Buddha was born. It is said that Gautama took 7 steps right after being born, which implied that he was destined to transcend and bring peace. The Mayadevi Temple is a temple with beautiful and intricate designs, which show the life and teaching of Lord Buddha.

Indian Emperor Ashoka also built a pillar called Ashoka Pillar in the 3rd century, and it is considered one of the oldest monuments built that is still standing today in Nepal. It contains inscriptions verifying the birth of Lord Buddha. There is also a Buddhist Monastery located there. It is very beautiful and peaceful. Many Buddhist pilgrims go there to study and practice the teachings of Lord Buddha.

The Temple of Sacred Pond is a temple where it is believed that Queen Maya, mother of Gautama took a bath before giving birth to him. Other landmarks in Lumbini include – The World Peace Pagoda, Ranighat Palace, Royal Thai Monastery, Myanmar Golden Monastery, Dae Sung Sakya, Chinese Temple, etc. Many other temples were built in Lumbini over time, which reflects the unique style of architecture and culture of those times. They may have been renovated many times, but they still retain their historical and cultural importance. Lumbini is a treasure trove of history and culture.

According to Buddhist beliefs, Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini where he was sheltered and not shown the cruelness of the world. He was given everything by his father. But when he reached the age of 29, he got to know of the sufferings of the outside world. After witnessing death, sickness, and suffering, Gautama was overwhelmed. He realized that as long as one lives, suffering and death were inevitable, no matter the wealth or riches.

Gautama left his home to be a wanderer. He traveled to many places where he gained knowledge and sought to end his samsara. Realizing that the knowledge he gained wasn’t the wisdom that he sought, he planned to gain the knowledge on his own. He sat under a “Bodhi” tree, meaning “wisdom” where he wouldn’t move until he found his answers. Finally, after a long arduous trial, he achieved nirvana, and got the title of “Buddha.” Buddha, meaning “The Awakened One” given that he was enlightened. This started Buddhism, which spread all over the world.

Lumbini has been enlisted on the World Heritage Site in 1997 AD. It is a very popular tourist destination and in 2019 more than 1.5 million tourists from all around the world came to visit. It is the property of the Nepal Government, being protected and managed by Lumbini Development Trust.
